Old-school butcher shop scales without enterprise cost

Lake Geneva Country Meats, a Wisconsin butcher shop that harvests animals, cuts steaks to order, and makes some of the best sausage around, reached the point where craft alone could no longer carry the back office. As the business pushed against a growth ceiling, Vice President Nick Vorpagel needed accurate data faster than QuickBooks Desktop could deliver, but found traditional ERPs too large and too costly for a team that wears many hats. By moving to Intuit Enterprise Suite, Lake Geneva Country Meats gained the daily visibility to keep pace with growth, freeing its front office to absorb more work on a two-person team while saving tens of thousands of dollars on implementation versus a traditional ERP.

The need to modernize from QuickBooks Desktop

The team ran on QuickBooks Desktop alongside manual spreadsheet exports for sales analysis and separate tools for payroll and marketing. As the company grew, that setup stopped answering the questions leadership needed.

The shift, as Vorpagel describes it, “was from knowing where to grow to knowing how to grow,” and that demanded a level of insight the old system couldn’t surface. He wanted to understand not just whether the business was making money, but how, across a variable, complex product mix. Reaching that view meant pulling data out by hand and reconciling it in spreadsheets, work “that drained hours a small team couldn’t spare.” Accounting, while critical, kept pulling Vorpagel away from product creation and customers, the work where his attention mattered most.

Our business learned that we needed a lot more information, and we needed better answers faster.

Intuit Enterprise Suite wins over traditional ERPs

Once it was clear the company had outgrown its desktop software, Lake Geneva Country Meats went searching for an ERP that fit its scale. “NetSuite was a big option we evaluated, but the fit was wrong on the terms that mattered to us,” says Vorpagel, “the implementation ran long, the cost ran high,” and the platform carried far more than the business would actually use. With an implementation time and price the company was unwilling to take on, NetSuite “seemed like too big of a solution for us.”

The introduction of Intuit Enterprise Suite changed the equation. For a team already fluent in the QuickBooks ecosystem, moving existing data over without starting from scratch removed the biggest risk of switching, and the familiarity meant enterprise power without an enterprise learning curve. Vorpagel calls the decision “so easy,” pointing to how closely the team listened to what mattered to the business and how straightforward it was to convert the company's data from QuickBooks into Intuit Enterprise Suite. It came down to fit on the two dimensions that decided the evaluation, budget and process.

NetSuite told me the implementation starts at months. We saved tens of thousands of dollars with Intuit Enterprise Suite, and that's just year one on implementation.

A two-person front office that scales with growth

The move reshaped how Lake Geneva Country Meats runs its day. Automation and better processes absorbed enough of the manual workload that the front office now keeps pace with the company's growth on a two-person team, handling work that once took three and freeing the office to scale without staffing up to manage it. Vorpagel credits the tangible time savings Intuit Enterprise Suite delivered, which moved the team off routine entry and onto higher-value work.

That same shift changed his own routine. According to Vorpagel, “I’m in Intuit Enterprise Suite every morning, reading reporting and dashboards to see where the business stands, and checking in weekly with the front office on payables and receivables.” Reporting that once took hours weekly being assembled by hand now feeds the KPIs he tracks, giving him more accurate data, faster, from a system that returns answers right away. The time he reclaims goes straight back into product creation and customer relationships.

The payoff Vorpagel feels most is cash flow visibility, which carries real weight in a business exposed to volatile commodity prices. Greater assurance that the cash will be there to pay vendors, he says, has been “a game changer for my sanity.” He leans on the platform's AI-native insights for the same reason, catching things he would not otherwise think to look for.

Building toward a connected business

Lake Geneva Country Meats is now focused on building on the platform's connected ecosystem. Vorpagel is set on tighter integration between Intuit Enterprise Suite and the company's marketing tools, with stronger customer tracking, so his outreach and his books eventually run from one consistent source. He is equally energized by what AI makes possible for a business as distinctive as his, seeing a path to build closer to exactly what the shop needs without heavy development cost. Through it all, the goal stays the same as the one that started the move, continuing to answer not just where to grow, but how.
